Itching in humans and animals is a symptom of something being wrong with the body. Itching is not a disease, and can be cured by treating the underlying condition. The sensation that causes your dog or pup to scratch is called pruritus and is caused by worms, parasites, bacterial and yeast infections, or allergies. In some cases, the primary cause of the itching may have subsided, but the sensation of scratch may remain for a longer time.

When to use natural and home remedies
Dogs constantly bite and scratch their fur as part of grooming. A little bit of scratching is not a cause for concern. If a dog has pruritus, it may continuously or excessively bite, chew or scratch at the same location. Sometimes the scratching, biting, or chewing could be vigorous, leading to bruising or wounding. Thoroughly examine your pet’s skin to look for open wounds, fleas, or ticks that may be causing the itch. You can try a few home remedies to help relieve the itchy sensation before taking them to a vet. If open wounds are bleeding or have a pus or watery discharge, do not use these remedies as they need a proper diagnosis and treatment. If you cannot find any parasite or an obvious cause of the itch, take the dog to a vet. Here are some home remedies for itching:

Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar has antifungal and antiseptic properties that can reduce the itch quickly. Do not use it if your dog has open wounds, as it can cause a stinging sensation. Combine equal portions of apple cider vinegar and water. Fill the liquid in a spray bottle and apply it on areas your dog keeps scratching. You can also soak their paws in this solution for about five minutes if they have walked through plants or grass, which can cause an itch.

Coconut oil
Plain coconut oil without fragrance additives is ideal for both pups and dogs as it is rich in anti-bacterial and antifungal properties. It also helps keep the dog’s skin and fur moist and helps repair the damage caused to the skin by itching. Rub a few drops of coconut oil in your palm and apply it to the dog’s fur or specific itchy spots.

Oatmeal bath
Oatmeal reduces pruritus and contains a dog’s impulse to scratch. Grind plain oatmeal to a powder and mix it with your dog’s bath. After the bath, your dog may lick the spots that bother them, which is natural and will not harm them. Alternatively, apply a smooth paste of oatmeal powder and water to areas where your dog scratches the most. Wait about 15 minutes for the oatmeal bath or paste to start working.

Green tea or chamomile tea bath
Green tea and chamomile have anti-inflammatory properties, and one way to use them as a remedy for itching is to bathe your pet dogs with them. Soak several bags of green tea or chamomile tea for a few minutes in your dog’s bath. Remove the tea bags once the water is cool, and allow your dog to soak in them. Both these teas are quite effective in controlling itchiness.

Aloe vera
Aloe vera plant is toxic to dogs but is a helpful remedy for their itching. Please keep the plant away from their reach, so they do not accidentally chew on the leaves. Remove the gel from the aloe leaves and apply it directly on the spots that bother them. Aloe vera cools the body and moistens the skin. If you are using store-bought gel, buy products that are 100% natural and do not contain added coloring or fragrance additives.
